Fantuan booth sign-up campaign

If you have passed through Manhattan’s Chinatown or Brooklyn’s 8th Avenue or Queen’s Flushing, you probably have seen the booths from Chinese food delivery apps like Hungry Panda or Fantuan. They give out freebies like plushies, totes, pins, … if you download the app. Sometimes I noticed a pretty cute item but I have avoided them since I assumed the booths are targeting Chinese speakers.

Well, the other day, I noticed a really cute Fantuan plushie and decided to give it a try. I went to the booth and spoke to the staff. After I downloaded the app and signed up, I just handed her my phone to work on the app. She spoke little English but we didn’t need to talk much anyway. Fantuan also has radically different UI if you select Chinese vs other languages.

Fantuan Plushie

Look at how cute the plushie is!

Interestingly, in order to track the sign-up, she used a dummy shop in Fantuan. She made an order for the $1 Fantuan merchandise 饭团周边 and went through the checkout flow. She selected WeChat Pay as the payment method and somehow I didn’t have to pay $1 and the order went through. The shipping map even turned up showing “delivery progress” from a nearby shop.

Yuki地推店 is the dummy Fantuan shop used for the booth sign-up campaign. Thankfully, the staff person didn’t order the $99,999 WeChat Mini Program QR code item.

You can even review the dummy order item and kinda gauge how many sign-ups they are getting.

After registering on the main app, she also installed WeChat Mini Programs on my phone and gave me another choice of an item so that was nice.

The WeChat mini apps unlocked another giveaway item. Interestingly, two mini apps “Fantuan Membership” and “Fantuan Food Delivery” were installed but their interfaces look exactly the same to me.

Fantuan Bag

Getting a bag feels a bit redudant with the plushie but this is too cute to pass.
